Harvard Faculty for Divestment

Comprised of over 1000 faculty across the University, Harvard Faculty for Divestment has pushed for fossil fuel divestment on campus and continues to support other divestment and decarbonization efforts.

On March 18, 2024, Cambridge University confirmed that they were placing a moratorium on all fossil fuel investments and donations. This follows their 2020 announcement to achieve net-zero emissions by 2038, and to fully divest from fossil fuels by 2030.

On March 1, 2024, the Harvard Management Company releases its annual climate report. The report outlines how the HMC plans to eventually achieve a net zero endowment target by 2050, “be carbon neutral in its operations,” and “establish better disclosure and practices to improve better data availability.”

On January 2, 2024, President Claudine Gay resigns. This announcement follows several months of plagiarism allegations, criticism of her testimony at the November Congressional hearing on antisemitism on college campuses, and confronting racism and sexism throughout her presidency, to which she alludes in her op-ed for the New York Times. Her presidential tenure is the shortest in Harvard’s history. Provost Alan Garber is serving as interim President.
